Southern California 2022 Haunted Attractions Guide

All Around SoCal

Labor Day has passed, and you know what that means! It’s time for our annual SoCal Haunt Guide! This year, we’re tweaking things just a little bit. In the past, this post has intended to be a repository of as many major haunts around L.A., Orange, Riverside, San Bernandino, Ventura, and San Diego Counties as possible, but that has led to this post getting pretty darn long. So this year, we are taking a bit more of a curated approach to this. The guide will still be lengthy, but we’re trying to inventory all the major professional haunts but focus on the quality home haunts and yard displays—almost all ones that we have visited—so that this article kind of functions as a recommendations post. We’ve also taken our haunted yard displays and moved them to the end of each area and omitted running dates, descriptions, and individual photos, mostly in an effort to reduce the length of this guide. Instead, please check the links for further information during haunt season, as operation dates are often not finalized until a little later.

We also recommend using the newly revamped Southern California Haunt List web site as a resource for haunt information like dates, times, and locations. The web site, run by our friend, Derek Young, of VanOaks Cemetery fame, is optimized for mobile devices and now includes a map view and more information for various haunts to help decide which places to hit up.

As always, this is an evolving post. Remember to check back to this page throughout the season as we update information and add more listings as we find them!

Six modernized chilling origin stories inspired by Universal's Monsters. Come and experience them for yourself!

House of Spirits presents Tale of Vaughan Hall
- Where: Casa Vertigo, 1828 Oak St, Los Angeles, CA 90015

The fires of Hell instantly ignited and consumed the room in flames, burning all alive. Thus goes the legend of Vaughan Hall, but what really happened to the Vaughan clan was much more disturbing. Loosely based on the famous haunting of Loftus Hall in Ireland and other Irish folklore and myths, House of Spirits weaves a disquieting and interactive storyline certain to leave guests delightfully chilled.

Guests must link the souls of disappeared, “ghosted” people with those who ghosted them, while avoiding the scorn of their wrath. This is the largest MHP maze they’ve produced thusfar, and every single haunt they’ve done has dripped with immense quality. This will only be more of the same!

The Haunted Rose presents: Beyond the Gates of Turnbull
- Where: Whittier Museum, 6755 Newlin Ave, Whittier, CA 90601
- When: Fri. Oct. 28 - Sun. Oct. 30 (nightly)
[ Click here for Westcoaster coverage of The Haunted Rose ]

A donation was requested last year, but this year sees a transition to hard ticketing. But at only $10 for the incredible quality, this is a steal in Southern California haunt land!

HOME HAUNT WALKTHROUGHS

Rotten Apple 907 is a legend, and they’re back for their 31st season! Yes, the actual name of this year’s maze is “Sssss.” It stands for Super Slithering Sinister Scare Snakes: The Maze. Okay, no it doesn’t, but guests will go into a creepy jungle. And there will be snakes. So… parseltongues welcome?

Note that the line may be cut off before the 10:00pm closing, as by city permit, Rotten Apple must be shut down by 10pm, not simply line-capped. Also, if you’re in the area, cruise the local neighborhood for some great haunted yard displays. There are several on Clark Ave west of Rotten Apple, and one great one on Ontario Street just on the opposite end of the block and then one block over from Rotten Apple!

Ghostwood Manor presents Pharaoh’s Hall
- Where: 2005 N Raymond Ave, Pasadena, CA 91103
- WhenFri. Oct. 14 - Sun. Oct. 16, Fri. Oct. 21 - Sun. Oct. 23, Fri. Oct. 28 - Mon. Oct. 31

A yard display the past couple of years, this great Pasadena SoCal Haunt List discovery is moving up to a walkthrough this year with an Egyptian themed haunt. With beautiful lighting, great effects, and terrific custom-made props, this fantastic home haunt received rave review from plenty of haunt fans last year!

Since this is back at a school location this year, Realm of Shadow is technically not a home haunt, but admission is free, so it effectively functions like one. Having impressed us twice with some immersive, creative layouts and scare tactics plus cool lighting effects and immersion, Realm of Shadow has definitely made our list of regular haunts to visit sometime around the last two weeks of October!

Fairbrook Manor

- When: Fri. Oct. 21 - Sun. Oct. 23, Fri. Oct. 28 - Sun. Oct. 30

One of our favorite discoveries of 2020 went from yard haunt to walkthrough last year and knocked it out of the park. Fairbrook Manor’s third year continues its lore of Victoria Fairbrook, a widow who’s tragic deaths of her own children drove her to madness and kidnapping and a house of fear. Their spirits still haunt the site of her old estate.

[ Click here for Westcoaster coverage of Knott's Scary Farm ]

The 49th Halloween Haunt brings returns to a 9 maze line-up this year after only having 8 last year:

  1. Bloodline 1842 - join the Daybreakers and hunt the vicious Valhymphri on the streets of Valdonia in this this vampire version of Special Ops: Infected

  2. The Grimoire - enter the world of a mysterious spell book and escape the demonic creatures inside or be eternally trapped within

  3. Mesmer: Sideshow of the Mind - this different and darker, more twisted (is that possible) take on a clown maze features a psychological assault on the senses

  4. Wax Works - the demented Dr. Augustus Scratch crafts his masterpieces made out of wax in horrifically realistic fashion… probably because they’re also made of people

  5. Origins: The Curse of Ghost Town - explore how Ghost Town Streets became the dark and twisted domain, prowled by menacing beasts and creatures that it is today

  6. The Depths - disappeared miners and a notorious sea creature punctuate this H.P. Lovecraft-inspired maze

  7. Dark Entities - a mysterious creature is attacking a desolate space station

  8. Dark Ride - this instant-classic returns with its murderous carnies and new rooms

  9. Pumpkin Eater - the monstrous villain of fairy tale lore searches for new victims

Also back this year is the Halloween Hootenanny overlay of the Calico Log Ride as well as the never-really-announced and confusingly semi-disturbing Calico Candy Mine Ride overlay. Ghost Town Streets, Carnevil, The Hollow, Foresaken Lake , and The Gore-ing 20’s return as scare zones this year, though this looks to be the end of the line for The Hollow this year.  The entertainment has been trimmed down to three shows, including the return of the wildly popular Puppet Up: Uncensored improve Muppet show by Henson Alternative; the Conjurers: Dark Magic show at the Bird Cage Theater; and Le Magnifique Carnaval du Grotesque music and dance show that replaced The Hanging last year at the Calico Stage. The Into the Fog art show also returns with new spooky masterpieces!

There will be trick-or-treating experiences in Calico, meeting spooky but friendly shopkeepers in an interactive set-up somewhat evocative of Ghost Town Alive! The Bob Baker Halloween Marionette Theatre show will delight guests in the Birdcage Theatre. Guests can look for the Great Pumpkin aboard the Grand Sierra Railroad and enjoy a Peanuts Halloween in Camp Snoopy, including the Great Pumpkin Palooza Show. And both the Log Ride and Mine Ride overlays will run during the daytime too.

The 17th Door
- Where: 1851 W Orangethorpe Ave, Fullerton, CA 92833
- When: Fri. Sep. 16 - Mon. Oct. 31 (select nights)
[ Click here for Westcoaster coverage of The 17th Door ]

Southern California’s most extreme pro haunt, The 17th door takes guests back to Perpetuum Penitentiary this year, where the inmates seem to have grown even more depraved and evil, thanks to the new Vixi-Technology that seems to draw out the absolute worst. They’ve taken over the facility, though, which can only mean bad things. Can’t take the prison live? Take a 50-minute upcharge Field Trip excursion before the main maze and experience a truly zany and off-the-wall separate experience. There’s also the Vixi Ward Experience, a VR attraction offered by The 17th Door as an upcharge.

Hauntington Beach Manor presents Midnight Shadows

- When: Thu. Oct. 7 - Sun. Oct. 31 (select nights)
[ Click here for Westcoaster coverage of Hauntington Beach Manor ]

Hauntington Beach Manor went pro last year and knocked it out of their park with their lengthy, immersive, creative, and super energetic haunt through an asylum filled with terrifying characters. This year, it returns to the Westminster Mall, on the lower level of the old Sears building, facing the 405 freeway, and will be offering their haunt in conjunction with Prism Haunt! It’s going to be a scream!

Prism Haunted House presents: MiCRO Lab Madness
- Where: Westminster Mall, 1025 Westminster Mall, Westminster, CA 92683
- When: Thu. Oct. 7 - Sun. Oct. 31 (select nights)
[ Click here for Westcoaster coverage of Prism Haunted House ]

After their home haunt was curtailed last year due to unwelcoming neighbors, Prism Haunted House has made the jump to a professional haunt, and they are joining forces with Hauntington Beach Manor to provide the second of two total mazes that guests can experience this year! Prism has always been at the technological forefront of haunted houses, and with nothing tethering him any longer, Dr. Sanguine can truly unleash the full brunt of his insidious terrors!

Dark Harvest presents Shady Pines Asylum
- Where: 5702 E. La Palma Anaheim, California
- When: Sat. Oct. 1 - Mon. Oct. 30 (select nights)
[ Click here for Westcoaster coverage of The Fleshyard ]
[ Click here for Westcoaster coverage of last year’s Dark Harvest ]
[ Click here for Westcoaster coverage of Harvest of Horrors ]

Alright, this is might get a little confusing. This year’s Dark Harvest is not quite the same as last year’s Dark Harvest, because last year’s Dark Harvest is now called the Haunted Harvest, and this year’s Dark Harvest is effectively the successor to The Fleshyard and back at the original location in Anaheim. But in exciting news, Dark Harvest is partnering with The Pirates Cave Productions (which unfortunately won’t be able to run its home haunt this year) and bringing visitors to the terrifying and haunting Shady Pines Asylum this year. We can’t wait to see the results of this exciting collabo!

Cross Roads Escape Games presents The Weeping Witch
- Where: 4245 E La Palma Ave, Anaheim, CA 92807
- When: opens Fri. Sep. 9 (runs Wed. - Sun. nights)
[ Click here for Westcoaster coverage of Cross Roads Escape Games ]

We stopped including escape rooms a couple of years ago because that wasn’t really our forte, but we’d have to include Cross Roads Escape Game’s newest escape room because it opens right at the beginning of haunt season, and it really offers a scary, immersive, thrilling experience that will get participants’ heart pounding and feeling like they’re part of an interactive haunted production.

The Weeping Witch is a spirit that lures people close by mimicking the sound of a woman crying. When people hear its wails, they follow the sound into the darkness, thinking someone needs help. Once they get close enough, the Witch attacks and slowly sucks the life out of its victims. Those who choose to enter Madam Ruby’s study can expect the Weeping Witch awaiting them. Will they be able to banish the evil spirit and end the family curse before the Weeping Witch consumes them too?

- Where: 13861 Gershon Pl, Tustin, CA 92705
- When: Sat. Oct. 29 - Sun. Oct. 30
[ Click here for Westcoaster coverage of The Gershon Dungeon ]

One of the longest home haunts in Orange County, this attraction might be viewed as the OC Beware the Dark Realm. Telling the story of one Guinivere Holt, a cruel orange plantation owner who tortured her slaves, The Gershon Dungeon takes place in the modern day, where the burial plot of the entire, long-lost estate has been unearthed, bringing heinous spirits and the ghost of the demonic Guinevere herself back to the realm of the living!

Santa Ana Haunt presents Shades of Hell: Goodbye
- Where: 2309 W Cubbon St, Santa Ana, CA 92704
- When: Fri. Oct. 21 - Sun. Oct. 23, Fri. Oct. 28 - Mon. Oct. 31
[ Click here for Westcoaster coverage of Santa Ana Haunt ]

In just a couple of years, the Santa Ana Haunt has transformed itself from new rookie on the scene to esteemed home haunt member. Last year, they expanded their home haunt to around the entire property and continued to provide innovative, creative, and unique scares that focused on psychology and tension in addition to intense jump scares. This year, they are asking for a mandatory $5 donation (oxymoronic, I know) to help with build and operating costs. A portion of the proceeds will also go to a local school music program or non-profit. Fans can pre-purchase their donation here!

[ Click here for Westcoaster coverage of Twisted Dreams Haunt ]

This old school haunt conjures up feelings of Knott’s Scary Farm in the early 2000s, with a violent and gritty feel focused on intense scare and abject terror. Sprawling an impressive length around the side and back yards of a Buena Park home, Twisted Dreams doesn’t care about pretty or polished. It just wants to horrify.

Fright Fest also brings back City Under Siege in the DC Universe area, plus favorites Exile Hill, TERRORtory Twisted, and Frightmares: A Twisted Fantasy, and also last year’s debuting scare zones, The Deadzone in the park’s Underground themed land (home of the West Coast Racers roller coaster) and Terror Rising: Dark Developments, in Baja Ridge. The event also has a new show, The Rising, to go along with favorites Unleashed (the opening monster ceremony signifying the start of Fright Fest) and the Voodoo Nights dance party.

- When: Fri. Oct. 7 - Sun. Oct. 30 (select nights)

Celebrating a decade and a half, Coffin Creek is one of those old school, fun, passionate, purely enjoyable haunts. It may lack the flash and dazzle dazzle of today’s haunts, but it retains good, old fashioned haunt quality, great energy, and lots of scares!  Coffin Creek returns this year with five attractions:

  1. The Brimstone Asylum for the Criminally Insane - the inmates have taken over, and they want blood

  2. The Catacombs and the Raven Cult - a mysterious group haunts the old burial grounds, looking for sacrifices

  3. The Curse of Voodoo Bayou - the haunted trail takes on a marshy tone this year

  4. Shady Hollow Hayride - the hayride brings guests into the dark woods, where sinister forces await

[ Click here for Westcoaster coverage of Castle Dark ]

Castle Park is under a completely new creative and production team, and they’ve unveiled a lot of news for this year’s event, including three all-new mazes:

  1. Jinxx’s Funhouse of Terror - chaneling the classic Knott’s Scary Farm clown mazes of years past, Jinxx and Havok wreck new frights

  2. The House Next Door - a 1980s Halloween party that starts out as fun and dance until the dark forces begin to manifest

  3. Morgana’s Revenge - Merlin's nemesis has recruited all the horrific beasts and monsters of medieval lore and unleashed them on guests to dare venture in

There will also be two consolidated scare zones: Medieval and Midway, which will feature a unique interaction between scare zones and mazes that allows monsters of each to flow back and forth between both domains. In addition, Castle Park’s 2 dozen rides & attractions will operate during Castle Dark, as well as their 4 award winning miniature golf courses.

The Haunted Harvest

[ Click here for Westcoaster coverage of Harvest of Horrors ]

Okay, remember the explanation of Dark Harvest above? Well, that applies here as the other half. In 2020, Perdition Home Haunt and The Fleshyard banded together to create the Harvest of Horrors at Frosty’s Forest pumpkin patch. This haunt was rebranded as Dark Harvest last year. But now, they’ve pulled off the trifecta by rebranding again as The Haunted Harvest, run by the Perdition Home Haunt team. The Haunted Harvest promises a 2-acre corn maze integrating 5 haunted houses into one course (sort of like an outdoor Reign of Terror). Each year, these folks aim bigger and better for more horror!

Mansion of Lost Souls
- Where: Promenade Temecula, 40820 Winchester Rd, Temecula, CA 92591
- When: Fri. Sep. 30 - Mon. Oct 31 (select nights)

Long ago, the sound of laughing children and happiness filled this revered doctor’s family home. However, to this day nobody knows just what happened to the family. Although, some stories say that he lost his mind. Some say it was a a psychotic patient who tortured the family before brutally murdering them all, one by one. Others talk of demons, and the possibility that someone became possessed. What we can tell you is that we still hear the tormented souls screaming, and trapped within the walls of this place. For a short time we are giving those brave enough, a chance to tour this massive house of terror. We cannot promise that you all will make it through, but we will pray for your survival.

Last year’s Dead Water State Penitentiary has been taken over by a horde of undead freaks created by a mad medical surgeon who wanted to create a disturbed army of deranged clowns that he could control and use to take over the prison. Art’s Sideshow
- Where: 5484 Moreno Street, Montclair, CA 91763
- When: open Wed. - Sun. year-round

Guests of Midsummer Scream and Seasons Screamings have no doubt noticed the elaborate display of horror figures and props at the conventions, and these horror artifacts have found a permanent home at Art’s Sideshow, which had used the conventions to do some pre-promotion prior to their recent formal opening. This museum of the macabre is a family owned business that was established in 2016 by Art Cordova. Art, a lifetime fan of horror and all things spooky began collecting life-size horror film props as a hobby. One prop led to two props and before he knew it a garage was not enough to house his most precious possessions.  A hobby turned into a passion and from that arose ARTS SIDESHOW!

The Fear Farm near Apple Valley keeps getting better and better and once again presents 2 mazes, a haunted hayride, scare zones, food, and entertainment. Sundown Manor Haunted House is the first maze, and the second, not-yet-announced maze is presumably the jungle-themed attraction that Fear Farm brought to Midsummer Scream. The quality of the sets and the energy of the talent are pretty impressive, and though Fear Farm is definitely far from most Southern Californians, it’s proving to be a destination haunt fans need to visit!

- When: Oct. 7 - Oct. 30 (Fri. - Sun. nights), Mon. Oct. 31
[ Click here for Westcoaster coverage of Maze of Mayhem ]

A maze before we started visiting, then a yard haunt for the past two years due to COVID and time, Maze of Mayhem is returning to its roots with a yard display that will incorporate a walk-through on select nights. Last year’s “walk-up” experience was really cool, with cool peek-in scenes and even a little scare. We can’t wait to see what this year brings!

Straite to Hale Productions presents Casket Creek
- Where: 477 Jasper St, Rancho Cucamonga, CA 91701
- When: Fri. Oct. 21 - Sun. Oct. 23, Fri. Oct. 28 - Mon. Oct. 31
[ Click here for Westcoaster coverage of Straite to Hale Productions ]

One of the best home haunts we visited last year was a spooky ghost town with curious characters and frightful spirits that just couldn’t seem the shake the shackles of a curse that a witch had placed on it before the townspeople executed her. The backstory might seem similar to Knott’s Scary Farm’s mythology, but the Straite to Hale folks put their own spin on a haunted Old West town, with plenty of amazing theming and enthusiastic scareactors to support!

The Dreich Society presents Nightmare
- Where: 1130 E. Highland Ct, Ontario, CA 91764
- When: Fri. Oct. 28 - Mon. Oct. 31
[ Click here for Westcoaster coverage of The Dreich Society ]

The Dreich Society puts on its first non-cinema-themed haunt since… well, we started following them!

Deep in the woodlands of Japan, stands an ancient temple, untouched by time. Originally designed to hold in the evil Yokai that once prowled freely, the containment sigils have since been broken, allowing travelers to step through the threshold and take a peek behind the curtain into their dark realm where nothing is as it seems. Follow the Kami and find the light to safety. Otherwise, you will be forever trapped in the Yokai’s eternal nightmare…

The Fun House Montclair
- Where: 4896 El Morado St, Montclair, CA 91763
- When: Sat. Oct. 1, Fri. Oct. 7 - Sat. Oct. 22 (Fri. - Sat. nights), Fri. Oct. 28 - Mon. Oct. 31
[ Click here for Westcoaster coverage of The Fun House Montclair ]

This short but intense haunt is one we found on the SoCal Haunt List last year, and it is unsurprisingly filled with demented clowns bent on terrorizing trespassers. The Fun House is a known fixture in the neighborhood, with plenty of popularity building up till Halloween. Impressively running most of October, the Fun House also has a great yard display component that functions as theming for the queue that stretches through its front yard and out onto the sidewalk.

High Desert Haunt / Victoria Manor Haunted House
- Where: 9976 Bonita Vista Rd, Apple Valley, CA 92308
- When: Fri. Sep. 30 - Mon. Oct. 31 (select nights)

Highly themed, with projection effects, intense actors, and a lengthy, open-air layout, this semi-professional home haunt is not for the faint of heart. In fact, it features three mazes on one property! Two have live scareactors; a third does not. And Victoria Manor is one of the few “home haunts” that starts right at the beginning of October, providing plenty of chances to enjoy the screams! Do note that this home haunt does charge for admission.

Desert Decay Manor
- Where: 55550 Calico Ave, Whitewater, CA 92282
- When: Fri. Oct. 28, Sat. Oct. 29, Mon. Oct. 31
[ Click here for Westcoaster coverage of Desert Decay Manor ]

Nestled in the foothills of the West Palm Springs Village, the Killgore family has resided on these hallowed grounds for generations. Some left trying to escape the family curse of a horrific untimely death. Gravely, they always come home, to dwell within the halls and walls of the manor, hoping to never be sent to the depths of hell which loom so close to their souls. Some turned murderous, some became victims. All are ghostly apparitions that remain here with their secrets to haunt the living in their attempt to take the souls of all who enter and send them to hell in their place. We thought Desert Decay Manor was going away after last year, but I suppose nothing really stays buried.
